I think you have a bad interface on that drive. I did a bit of research, (I'm not very knowlagable about computers), and eventually chose a Crucial m4 SSD, 256GB, 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s to replace it with. When trying to use Apple's Disk Util for adjusting partitions or reformatting, I would end up with a greyed selection or what appeared empty space that could not be recovered.
